How to control oily skin

To control oily skin, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) provides some helpful tips :

  1. Wash your face every morning and evening, and after exercise. Avoid scrubbing your skin, as it can irritate and worsen the condition.
  2. Choose skin care products that are labeled “oil-free” and “noncomedogenic.” These products, including cleansers, moisturizers, and makeup, won’t clog your pores or cause acne.
  3. Use a gentle, foaming face wash. Many people with oily skin believe they need a strong face wash to dry out their skin, but using a harsh one can actually irritate your skin and trigger increased oil production. Look for a mild, gentle face wash instead.
  4. Avoid using oil-based or alcohol-based cleansers, as they can irritate your skin.
  5. Apply moisturizer daily, even if you have oily skin. Look for a moisturizer that also contains a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to save time and protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
  6. Wear sunscreen outdoors to prevent sun damage, wrinkles, age spots, and skin cancer. Choose sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and avoid those with fragrance or oils.
  7. Opt for oil-free, water-based makeup.
  8. Always remove all makeup before going to sleep. Avoid sleeping in your makeup.
  9. Use blotting papers throughout the day to absorb excess oil. Gently press the paper against your face for a few seconds, avoiding rubbing it on your face.
  10. Avoid touching your face throughout the day, as it can spread dirt, oil, and bacteria from your hands to your face. Only touch your face when cleansing, moisturizing, applying sunscreen or makeup, and ensure your hands are clean first.

Remember, everyone’s skin is different, so it’s essential to find what works best for you. If you’re concerned about the amount of oil your skin produces or struggling with blackheads or acne, consider making an appointment with a board-certified dermatologist
